Installing the ethernet dongle on Ubuntu laptops

Description

The ethernet dongle is required on the Lenovo machine of Team fezzik due to the lack of Wifi drivers for the Lenovo hardware under Linux 14.04. It enables to use Wifi internet through the ethernet dongle plugged into a USB rather than using the built in Wifi module.

Hardware requirements

  1. ROS-branded USB stick
  2. Netis ethernet dongle

Instructions

  1. Locate the driver archive on the USB stick - pick “Driver for Ubuntu 16.04 - RTL8812AU…” (yes, do this even if the laptop is running Ubuntu 14.04!)
  2. Copy to home folder and extract
  3. Ensuring the dongle is not plugged in, run sudo chmod a+x install.sh then sudo ./install.sh in the extracted archive. You are likely to see some errors about loading wifi module 8812AU, and not having the required key. This is happening because we’ve run a third-party kernel update and Linux doesn’t like it.
  4. Ignoring the errors, plug in the dongle, then restart the machine and load up the BIOS (by hitting F2 repeatedly during start-up) and navigate to Security. Select “Disable” for Secure Boot, then boot as usual.
  5. If it’s worked, you should see the LED on the dongle light up

Using nomachine to stream data from one machine to another

Description

Nomachine is a streaming service that allows simple, highly performant video and audio streaming, similar to services like Teamviewer. It is required for example to visualize our GUI or RViz debugging on an external monitor without the need of any cables attached to DE NIRO.

Installation

  • Download the tar.gz files from https://www.nomachine.com/download/linux&id=1

  • Unpack and move the folder to /usr

  • Follow the instructions in the README file within the folder for installation.

    • You need to distinguish between the server (the machine from which content shall be streamed) and the client, to which content shall be streamed.
    • Oddly, you need to install the server software in both cases. Do so with
    • In case you set up nomachine on the client machine, goto /usr/NX/scripts/setup and execute:
